Make sure “show what I am listening to” is on in the settings
On top of what Eric already told you, the typical reason Windows Media Player music status sometimes appears to randomly stop working is because the Messenger plugin gets disabled when the player didn’t shut down properly.
If you open up the Media Player options, go to the Plug-ins tab and then the Background category, you should see a checkbox to enable it:
