Microsoft coming for Discord

this aged like milk tbh

It’s honestly sort of surprising given Microsoft’s history, so it’s understandable why so many people thought it’d turn into WLM or Skype or something.

I don’t disagree with these sentiments, but I suspect this isn’t the end of the story.

In the Bloomberg article of the original deal rejection, they push the idea that they’ll take the company public instead. Now 3+ years later, that’s been mentioned many times but has yet to happen.

Given they’re still growing and being funded (the Series H round started in 2020 before this Microsoft buy attempt), unless they really wanted to give up/cash out, there’s probably wisdom in trying to establish the business (or at least get more established to increase the value).

Personally, as it stands right now, I think they would need some major changes to become a profitable company, but I’m happy to be proved wrong :stuck_out_tongue:.

tl;dr I still think they could be acquired (maybe by someone else though).

tone honest this is hella expected since it’s Microsoft :stuck_out_tongue:

Honestly, i still think Discord will sell out and become public, and if that happens, RIP Discord.

A unlikely scenerio:
Discord open sources itself when it sells out and become public.

I still find the downfall of Skype so weird… like I used to use it all the time to speak my grandparents in France and now I’m older and I haven’t heard anything about it in like 7 years :skull::skull::skull: like how did it happen??? anyways I hate Skype bc of the billion group chats I get shoved into. it’s usually got like Trump and Elon musk in there and people actually think it’s them :sob::sob::sob: and it’s always a bitcoin scam

the rise of more popular platforms such as whatsapp and facebook messenger overshadowed skype
