How do I get AIM and add people here?

I’ve seen posts on this forum where people give emails to add them on AIM, but my question is how do i sign up? Which website do I use to download it from? And what server do i use?
Is there a specfic one the guys here use?

You can use NINA (supports more stuff than everything else out there at the moment), though access to AIM requires at least a $5 donation for the time being.

There’s also Phoenix, but you really should not use that. It has a horrible track record when it comes to security.

You can just use auto-generated passwords tho

Also someone build a OSS AIM server and apparently you can use it with ChivaNet Services: https://aim.chivanet.org/

Means jackshit if they’re stored in “so weak that it’s basically plaintext” half-assed XOR.

Yeah, this is a really cool project too.

Though, NINA does still support more stuff (like AIM 6+ and ICQ).

ChivaNet Services looking very nice, didn’t heard about it.

It’s paywalled sadly

You’re right, but at least your own personal password will not be leaked suddently. It’s still bad practice to use same passwds on many websites and services :dog:

ChivaNet proprietor here! We’re currently experiencing some technical difficulties with our upstream provider, but we have a trouble ticket in with them and expect an update within the next 2-4 hours.

Also, per the password security issue: ChivaNet stores passwords for ChivaNet itself as secure SHA-512 one-way hashes. When you create an AIM screen name on ChivaNet, those credentials go into a different database, and unfortunately have to be stored as insecure MD5 hashes for compatibility with old AIM clients. My recommendation (and one repeated on the SN registration form on ChivaNet) is to avoid reusing any important passwords for AIM SNs. Not reusing passwords is always a good idea, but special emphasis for older tech like this using outdated hashing algorithms.

You can use NINA, The Running Man Network, or… Phoenix. (bleh!)

It’s a Pay up!

Uses Older AIM

0% Secure

So, There are no “Perfect” AIM Revivals.

What’s the problem with Nina? come on dude, its just $5+ (or 10$)

Not everyone wants to pay just to have an account.

bro not everyone is adult that can pay for smth
childs and students have like… poket moneei… and they spending them on themselves only (food taxi pharmacy etc)

Then wait for it to be public. There’s multiple reasons why it’s not open to the public right now.

If you don’t wanna pay, wait. They’re still in beta testing, at Gamma.

Here’s a piece of the about section of the Running Man Network.

runningman.network is an open-source, hosted OSCAR server that lets you communicate with friends using ancient AIM clients.

So it was meant to be run on ancient AIM clients, depending on how you look at it. Also, what’s so wrong about using older versions of AIM?

I agree.

nina fans waiting for aim to be open while at the same time ignoring thousands of other available alternatives that they can use right now

Except there have been times where we fully opened registration to everyone for a limited time already and it will be free when it’s all finished. No other server has what we have right now, complete AIM support, ICQ support (2000 to the last version), mobile apps, a large community and frequent updates.

Wait, Didn’t Phoenix have their own custom client for Android?

Yeah. It sucked though.

Why use a cobbled together mess now when I can wait a little while for something that doesn’t suck? The only other AIM server available right now that has any kind of a tangible userbase is Phoenix, which… yeesh.

Also, something I should point out, despite NINA being in a paid private beta, it consistently has similar user counts to Phoenix, KICQ, etc combined, if not more.

Interesting…

nina has very extensive ICQ support, even to custom icq clients.
after all, there so many things supported in ICQ part, and that without taking into account AIM functions stuff.
