TUTORIAL: [Linux] Windows Live Messenger Installation on Debian Linux with Youtube video

Excuse me the necroposting, but I wondered if Messenger Plus Live can work on Wine as well… I had no luck tho

the MSN Plus does not work on Linux unfortunately.

there has to be a way to make it work… I am sure there is. Just, we need to understand how MsgPlus works… Has anyone any documentation about that?

I could not solve that. I think hemoo could because he has said that

I am using Ubuntu MATE 20.04, and i still cant login, i cant type anything into the boxes and i have everything installed that i need, tahoma is installed, and it seems that corefonts wont install

Good news!
Today I found a solution for empty text boxes and 80048821.
The main problem is the newest Wine (yet). On latest wine version (~5.0) always got that error message, but I downgraded to 4.0 and now I could log in to WLM.

So what to do?
Simply download wine 4.0 deb file/use downgrader software on Ubuntu and install it.
On Arch just simply run downgrade wine command and select 4.0’s number.

Why do I have empty text boxes in login screen?
Probably you forgot install winetricks packages. Run this command in terminal:
winetricks corefonts gdiplus msls31 msxml3 riched20 riched30 tahoma flash

If you have any problems yet, just go ahead and I’ll try help you.

Everything is installed, and im using wine 4.0, i had to install wine and msn using playonlinux though. not sure if that is part of the problem, but i still get small login boxes that dont work

Use native wine instead of playonlinux.

can you just report this in the bug tracker

What?

Wait, where i can download the Wine 4.0 deb files?

That’s for 18.04 64-bit apparently. So i just replace 18.04 to 16.04, amd64 to i386 (to match my OS) and wish me luck doing this

Yay, I found a better solution
sudo apt install wine-stable-i386=4.0~xenial

Downloading http://download.microsoft.com/download/office97pro/fonts/1/w95/en-us/tahoma32.exe failed
Crap

Using Wayback Machine and it works

WHY I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD 2 VERSIONS OF FLASH PLAYER!? (14.0.0.176 AND 14.0.0.179) HOLY okay

flash install completed, but installed file /home/twimusic/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/system32/Macromed/Flash/FlashUtil32_14_0_0_179_Plugin.exe not found
It’s done, but when terminal says that, i find the file and i found it (Uninstall Utility it seems)
But I tried WLM 8.5, and still doesn’t work

Did you install winetrick package?

I do that with winetricks.

Then just skip the Flash player one.
winetricks corefonts gdiplus msls31 msxml3 riched20 riched30 tahoma

Executing w_do_call corefonts corefonts already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call gdiplus gdiplus already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call msls31 msls31 already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call msxml3 msxml3 already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call riched20 riched20 already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call riched30 riched30 already installed, skipping Executing w_do_call tahoma tahoma already installed, skipping

Considering I did all of them, and still doesn’t work. :frowning:

Interesting, I try older version of MSN (5.0) and I got this:
RAS support is not implemented! Configure program to use LAN connection/winsock instead!
It thinks I’m using modem?

I have no idea what’s wrong. I am using Arch Linux and it works for me pretty well. You should try out an Arch based distro like Manjaro Linux (So easy so use), to check how msn will work.
