The DIY Nostalgia Combo (Last Updated: 05/20/2024)

Last Updated: 10/26/2024 (now I can’t edit the title)

This is an updated version of the old Nostalgia combo that I have made all the way back in 2020

WARNING: The following list does not express an opinion about current interfaces; If you have a case of nostalgia bait, don’t think the following options are necessarily (or actually) better. And, most importantly, choose wisely! Make an equilibrium and don’t create a time machine in your mind

If needed, a Parental Rating will be shown as age (TL;DR: 10+, 13+, etc)

1. Firefox CSS themes with nostalgia in focus:

1.1 Geckium:

It is, by now, the most accurate pack that is released on which brings back the old visual style of Google Chrome, but in Firefox!
It got released not so long ago. Also one of the founders is probably a brazillian; the other one is idk maybe from USA?
Here’s Geckium Discord server: AngelBruni's server

I have this theme I made myself, but you can use any chrome or firefox theme

Btw you can make the devs sleepless with ko-fi or become a patreon to support them

1.2. Echelon:

Make Firefox 115ESR older! And very accuratedly

Just a reminder that I’m not sure when it’ll get into 128ESR, so this is the last state by now

2. GPlex - Old Google Frontend

It’s that simple.
It’s just a reskin of Google with cool settings… What else should I say?

Oh yeah, you can get custom images by using this following script

Note:

I used to recommend using Mycroft Project to set oldgoogle.neocities as the default browser. However, GPlex supports a better experience when searching, including keywords and Google Images/Videos.

3. Old Messengers

There’s already a post that cites most of the Old Messenger revivals that are available as of right now (infos might be not be the most accurate)
UPDATE: The topic is outdated. Because of that, some new ones are not included, such as CrossTalk13+. CrossTalk is a growing up MSN Revival; and as of October, it’s open for everybody until 1st of November, then you’ll have to fill an application to become a tester.

4. Old ROBLOX Revivals!

4.1 Novetus:

It’s an app that has a collection of old roblox clients.
It has been around since 2014, and it’s unlikely to be taken down by ROBLOX.

4.2 Finobe Revived13+

This is not quite the original Finobe, but it seems to be available to public pre-registring before it becomes a closed beta test! As of right now, only Audio publishing works, and the Client isn’t ready yet

5. Windows Media Center for Windows 10/11

Wanna trip into the nostalgic world of the Windows Media Center? Or perhaps just wanna install it so you can complete your own Windows 7 transformation pack? This installation of Windows Media Center is possible thanks to DVD Player!
Unfortunately, Media Center Extender/XBOX 360 support is mostly broken

  • If you wanna play other than standard audio files (such as ogg, wavpack, .flac, etc) you’ll have to install a codec pack. K-Codec Pack Lite/Essential works, but it might lack the function to hop on a specific timing in a song. If you really use that function, you might rather use an alternative codec instead.

6. Vorapis (a.k.a. Vorbis, V3):

The most accurate Old YouTube front-end implementation as of 2024. It has been Open Beta since May, and it supports both Firefox and Chrome (but it can be also be used as a Tampermonkey extension).

7. About the classic icons…

Certainly an unreliable way to get classic icons are getting the images then converting into png (atleast on Windows). Instead of doing that, get the .exe file of the program then extract, so you can use the icons inside the .exe file. You can also use Resource Hacker and extract all the icons as .icns (I think this is how it’s named)… Sometimes you’ll just have to use the setup file itself, if that contains the same icon of the app (example: apps using a generic installer)

8. Classic Media Players (not Media Centers!):

8.1 AIMP (Info, if that’s important: Russia)

The reason why I did chose AIMP on the list is because of how it is simply the most (simply) customizable Media Player out there. It’s already a cold-take that Foobar2000 is even more customizable, but the fact that it is very detachable, it can also be a little complicated to use it.

  • Now, if you wanna do some crazy stuff with this app… Well… It also works very well as you can tell-

btw you can find them all at https://www.aimp.ru/?do=catalog

8.2 WACUP

image
It is just a program made to be the good old WACUP, but better and updated. It also fixes some issues for modern operating systems, and includes some good amount of sound library plugins.
On the contrary of AIMP, its visual style can’t be completely changed to WMP, for example. But if you’re seeking for pure nostalgia and support for old themes such as the Original XBOX one. You might encounter more of them at https://skins.webamp.org/. The preview songs aren’t the best, but you can use your own songs as well and test it

  • A better alternative for Linux could be Audacious, which has similar functionalities and supports WinAMP icons, but it’s limited to plugins, unfortunately. So, the only way to get an authentic experience would be to install WACUP with WINE, but I can’t guarantee how buggy or laggy it will be

9. Bello 9 Theme for Kodi

Although this is very unrelated to a revival project, you can still feel the essence of a PS3 and combined with this theme that is available on Kodi! You can use it, in case you wanna an alternative to Windows Media Center but for Linux
You can download it via the official repository at the settings.

10. Nostalgic aiming themes!

10.1 AeroThemePlasma (Linux)

TL;DR: For those who uses Wayland, do not use KWin (if you don’t wanna have issues with the theme)
It is a transformation pack aimed to make KDE Plasma 5 to look like Windows 7!
By far, that is the most complete TP (of Windows 7) out of all of them

10.2 Windows XP Total Conversion for XFCE (Linux)

Wait a minute, is this Windows XP?
How many inaccuracies can you find on the screenshot below?
xfce-winxp-tc is, as of right now, the peak Windowsxp transformation pack for Linux as of 05/20/2024!

13. Beautyfox (IE9 theme for Firefox)

From the same creators of the upcoming Geckium theme:

Very beautiful and realistic IE8 experience, isn’t it?
I think there will be a rewrite based on Geckium, but that specified version only works in Firefox 115 ESR

14. Aerochat13+

[i have no screenshots by now lol]

The original Aerochat is back! Get into the old times using an active program called Discord.

Just a warning that this is obviously against the Discord TOS, despite having no case of bans

ProtoWeb (for historical purposes)

This is a Server on which you can access any old websites just like in the 90s, but in 2024!

[AS OF DECEMBER 2023] The most compatible browser to use are currently Internet Explorer in versions 4 to 6. If your computer has a newer version of Internet Explorer (Vista and Above), you might wanna use Opera 10/12 or RetroZilla (Protoweb Edition)!

More being added soon and more being fixed soon!

Omg Nico i love u tysm for this will help a lot with my windows 7 stuff

Silver fox is amazing but fun fact u can possibly make chrome 109 look slightly older by using the old icon files and adding a classic new tap page (lots on Chrome web store)

I love the Bella 9 theme also it gives off futriger metro vibes

It’s just a reskin of Google Programmable Search Engine combined with old html, idk why ittr is so secretive about that and treats it like his own copyright i did the same thing when i was 9 years old

Update 1: A new WACUP update has a fix for crashing issues on Windows 11
Update 2: Added Protoweb
Update 3: some fixes
Update 4: AeroChat GitHub page is deprecated, but there is a incomplete project that tries to revive it GitHub - fullmoon-community/wlmcord: AeroChat continuation. Will also add Windows 7-8(.1) support.. Can’t add it until testing it out and some other stuff
