I’ve recently registered because I’m a big fan of the Escargot project. I noticed that while we have a modded Mercury Messenger for Android, the original Windows Live Messenger APK (the one released by Microsoft around 2010/2011) still doesn’t work with Escargot servers.
I actually have the original app installed on my device, but it obviously fails to connect. Since Escargot is all about digital preservation and the “authentic” experience, I was wondering if there are any plans to support the protocols used by this specific mobile client (likely MSNP18 or MSNP21 with specific mobile endpoints).
I’m more than happy to help with testing, providing logs, or sharing the APK if needed to help with the reverse engineering process.
Has anyone looked into this before? It would be amazing to have the official UI back to life on Android!
com.play.wlm (Messenger Play!) Uses the XMPP gateway pretty much as-is. No obfuscation done to any of the classes that arent ubikod.capptain.
It’s predecessor miyowa.android.microsoft.wlm however…
Well in 2.0.90, it’s stubbed? It just forces you to download com.play.wlm instead.
I don’t know what it’s doing, it doesn’t reference either main protocol. Possibly just a serialized proxy server that doesn’t speak to the actual servers?
I don’t have Messenger Play! I downloaded the official Windows Live APK from Aptoide (it’s in Spanish. If you’re running Android 13+ on your phone go to Settings > System > Languages & input > App Languages. Select Windows Live and change the language. If it works, let me know!
There was no official Android client for Windows Live Mesenger, any that exist are third-party.
The only official mobile clients are for iOS, Windows Mobile/Phone, Symbian, and BlackBerry OS.
In any case, it looks interesting and I might poke around with getting it working with CrossTalk, assuming it’s not a client that utilizes the XMPP gateway.
