Can you describe the problem in more detail? Any error messages you might be getting?

Getting to the Add a contact screen is different on every version, but in a lot of the major versions you can open up the main Messenger window, press the ALT key to bring up the menu, choose the Contacts menu and then the Add a contact... choice. Alternatively, look in the toolbar in the main Messenger window for the button with a Messenger icon with a + sign.
