Escargot Vs Crosstalk.im

what’s y’alls opinions on crosstalk and escargot? which one works better? and which one’s been in less drama?

i’m just curious cuz i got kinda scared off of escargot after hearing about some possible drama but i’m not 100% sure which one is better or has less drama.

If you think about it, both have their own dramas, though if I had to choose, I’d stick with Escargot. I’ve been using it for half a decade and I still use it now, despite the whole incident that caused Escargot to shut down their server and the NINA. Crosstalk doesn’t seem to be something particularly special. It works, but, after using it… I don’t think it’s really worth it, not to mention the COUNTLESS outages they had. It’s funny too cause despite the year-long halt, AIM was still working under NINA’s servers, while Crosstalk’s AIM server didn’t work (as of writing this, they still hadn’t don’t work, yet).
So for short, if you wanna talk with more folks, head for Escargot, many still use it, and I’d say it’s more stable :stuck_out_tongue:

At least get the facts right.

These are almost entirely because of our hosting provider and not because of CrossTalk itself. We’re working on switching providers.

NINA’s AIM service took 5 years to develop from the first mention on this forum to public release.

CrossTalk is not my job nor is it my first priority. It’s a hobby project I work on for fun.

I have an actual life to worry about that comes before any projects. If you want to see it come out faster, it’s open source… just help out instead of sitting around complaining :stuck_out_tongue:

CrossTalk supports everything Escargot supports (as far as MSN Messenger goes), and more. We have (currently unfinished, though will be fleshed out in the next server update) WLM 2011/2012 support as well as full support for 1.0 - 2009, Yahoo! Messenger 5.0 - 8.1 (with many fixes and support for 4.1 and 9.0 coming in the next server update.). We don’t have AIM yet (not publicly, we do have a functional implementation in the server’s master branch but it’s not finished yet) but we do plan to have support at the same level as NINA eventually.

Both are stable all things considered but have their server issues sometimes. Escargot had an issue over the past year with constant login server crashes (I’m not sure if that’s since been fixed however), and CrossTalk’s current hosting provider isn’t the greatest as they constantly have network routing issues, but we’re going to move to a better one later this week, which should resolve the downtime issues.

Escargot’s drama is pretty bad as it entails really shady behavior of their developers. The recent CrossTalk drama if you’ve heard about it is just a huge petty nothingburger once you look into it and the root cause of it is now resolved. I think there’s a pretty big difference there.

alright, nice to hear. personally, i’m probably just gonna stick with crosstalk. but there’s one more thing, can crosstalk users not talk to escargot users? i thought they could but i might just be wrong.

No, CrossTalk and Escargot are entirely seperate services.

so even if there’s two WLM users they’re just not able to message each other if one’s on escargot and the others on crosstalk?

In the same way you can’t message someone on Phoenix while using NINA, nope. Seperate server, seperate user database, seperate everything.

Forgot to mention - ICQ, MySpaceIM, XMPP, and Skype are coming too, but those are long term goals.

Eh, I still like Escargot, deal with it
