I added some friends and tried to message them but it wouldn’t let me.
It says “A conversation with ____ couldn’t be started. Please try again.”
What you’re describing usually happens with old @yahoo.com accounts but can happen to others too.
Unfortunately Messenger has slowly broken for some accounts over time and you may see this and other problems.
For the best reliability you and your contacts should be using Microsoft accounts (Windows Live accounts) that end with @hotmail.com, @msn.com or @outlook.com.
All of my contacts use @hotmail.com.
What about yours? If only for testing purposes, I would try making a new Microsoft account and seeing if the problem continues in that account.
Ok, I made an account named "firstname.lastname@example.org" then friended that account with my account with Butterfly Messenger. I tried to start a conversation but it gave the same error.
What about trying to talk on Butterfly with contacts in general? Messenger uses HTTPS for communication so any software or anything else on your network that wrangles or messes with https communication will probably break Messenger from communicating. Proxies, https sniffing tools, miscellaneous “security software”, that sort of thing.
how did you sign into WLM 2012 in the first place
What you may not be aware of is that Microsoft’s Messenger server only recently went down in May of this year. Prior to that, you could still sign into 2012, and prior to March 2015, you could sign in on all the versions.
oh,I JUST BARELY MISSED MY CHANCE TO USE MESSENGER BECAUSE I DIDN’T FIND THE PROGRAM BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN
You are here now, so you can be happy about that, and we’re happy you’re here
However, this thread will be closed as it’s not presently valid since 2012 support is not available.
