Avast detected messenger plus

My Avast is detecting Messenger Plus as a virus. Is it a false positive? I’m afraid to download it and get a virus. I even checked on VirusTotal, I downloaded it via Escargot.

Likely because it modifies how the MSN Messenger / Windows Live Messenger programs function. AV programs always see that kind of behaviour as destructive and/or malicious, even when the program has honest intentions such as debloating Windows. While i’ve seen plenty using it, but go with your gut. Nobody’s gonna blast you for not using it.

It’s a false positive - Messenger Plus was bundled with (basically) opt-in adware that would give the developers money, and even though it hasn’t been active in a long time it still freaks out antiviruses. It’s safe to use, promise
