Escargot isn’t exactly the best choice, so would anybody want to use this?
… I don’t know, Jeff hasn’t been seen… Anywhere on the public internet in years.
I kind of forget it exists. I don’t even know the people that use it anymore.
the best choice right now is crosstalk https://crosstalk.im
It’s still online?
It gave me errors rn…
^ isn’t crosstalk invite only/waiting for a key only?
registration is open to anyone right now without a key needed
oooh right! ![]()
Is there a conflict between the escargot-wlm program and the crosstalk one? or can one have both installed?
I believe CrossTalk uses more URL replacements options in it’s DLL, and I don’t know if the patch DLL it uses is a drop in replacement (might be?, not sure), in theory you could switch back and forward by editing the msnmsgr.exe-reroute.ini file’s options…
For an example, this is CrossTalk’s default connection settings:
[options]
type=msn
server=ms.msgrsvcs.ctsrv.xyz
authserver=ctas.login.ugnet.xyz
abserver=ctsvcs.addressbook.ugnet.xyz
adserver=ctsvcs.advertising.ugnet.xyz
storageserver=cts.storage.ugnet.xyz
appserver=mactivities.msgrsvcs.ctsrv.xyz
mailserver=mail.ugnet.xyz
socialserver=social.ugnet.xyz
configserver=conf.msgrsvcs.ctsrv.xyz
If you want to change to use Escargot servers, you’d change every server variable to msnmsgr.escargot.chat, and change configserver to conf.escargot.chat.
In terms of using escargot’s patch (msnmsgr.exe-escargot.ini) FOR now you can, just do this, just keep in mind that it is an unofficial method of using CrossTalk:
[options]
type=msn
server=ms.msgrsvcs.ctsrv.xyz
configserver=conf.msgrsvcs.ctsrv.xyz
maybe i wasn’t completely clear or most likely i am not understanding, lol.
can i run the .exe file i downloaded thru escargot at the same time as the download from crosstalk? or is it actually the same client and it will try to install/overlap/something when I already have escargot’s downloaded msn .exe ? are the clients the same or two different .exe programs? i dont want to cause issues with my already installed escargot msn if i just download crosstalk-msn and install it.
I would assume it’d override the install files to replace it with it’s patched copy, yes.
I’m not asking for the best, just something good that isn’t escargot (crosstalk is too complicated to set up)
CrossTalk isn’t any more complicated to set up than Escargot is. Matter of fact in it’s current state I’d argue it’s the easiest to set up
.
You create an account, install a prepatched client, and, assuming you’re on a new enough OS to not have SSL issues/your root certs are updated, you’re golden.
I would heavily advise against using Escargot Switcher as a rewrite is planned for CrossTalk to turn it into a microservices-based service (i.e. each service runs on it’s own domain, like is specified in Reroute’s config file). Reroute is a reworked version of Escargot Switcher that is compatible with those types of services + supports more clients such as WLM 2011+, newer versions of Yahoo! Messenger, and MySpaceIM.
Also working on switching to a MinGW/GCC-based toolchain instead of MSVC to allow compatibility with older versions of Windows.
Since it’s still utilizing Detours, compatibility with 9x seems to be out of the question, but NT 4.0 and especially 2000 and XP <SP2 seem very possible.
I already admitted this by saying “this is unsupported”.
From experience, you need a bit of a modified VS2005 SDK to build detours, lower isn’t possible from what i’ve tried
It builds normally on VS2008+.
I should really work on yarp again, but waiting on figuring out how to standardize /.well-known/msnp_configuration.json…
so to not get things mixed up, i’d have to uninstall escargot to use crosstalk? (and by using crosstalk i mean following the normal way, creating account, downloading from the site, installing and using.)
i’m not interested in having to tamper with code/scripts within escargot related downloads.
what about wlm 2011? and what if i’m on a mac? (which i am)
My tl;dr: do not use escargot after the drama.
WLM 2011+’s patching instructions are only available to testers as the current patching method breaks Microsoft Accounts integration in Windows, and our MSNP21 implementation is generally unfinished. (note on the Supported Clients page it’s labeled as “Partially Supported”.) Simply ask for access in the Discord server and I’ll give it. Most other versions have prepatched installers available.
As for Macs, you can run the Windows client (8.5 and older) in Wine. If you don’t want to do that, there are native third party clients available that work.
ended up trying crosstalk, but the .msi installer didnt work on my laptop (it starts but then nothing) and yeah i granted it access to allow installing lol it just disappears. i uninstalled escargot msn first so now i got none haha
