My first thought would be anything from the Mega Man franchise.
However, my apologies for side tracking the conversation somewhat, but I’m curious what the key differences would be between a 2D shooter and a platformer (one where a gun is involved)? For example, with the timescale restriction lifted, my further thought might be Commander Keen, where the raygun is essential, but not always effective and might be considered a platformer instead.
